The last recorded payment involving the name of Garton, the Covent Garden treasurer. Unclear which "Mr Jones" this was. The likeliest candidate is the Mr Jones paid "on Acct. of Interest" only 21 days prior (5 June 1786); this £63 may have been his principal. The penultimate payment involving Garton was "Pd. Miss Stuart on Mr Gartons Acct", 23 June 1786; this presumably related to the actress Ann Stuart, who had been paid interest on £100 on 2 January 1786. Whatever was happening with Miss Stuart - whether a loan she had made the theatre, or arrears of salary which had accrued interest - therefore may have been happening with Mr Jones too. |
