Mr. Burgess 2 Payt. on Shaw's £100 Bill |
There are a number of payments to Mr. Shaw recorded in the 1797-98 season, in which an outstanding £100 bill and the word "Attorney" are often mentioned, but never in the same entry. It has been presumed here that all of these payments relate to each other, Shaw being an attorney who was owed £100. However, there were other Shaws working at or with Drury Lane around this time, including Thomas Shaw, musician and leader of the band, who accumulated huge arrears of unpaid salary; so perhaps Thomas Shaw was the man involved in some or all of the payments in question. Militating against this latter suggestion is the fact that a £100 bill seems relatively small fare compared to arrears that apparently, by 31 July 1808, ran to £7983 (BD, vol. 13, p. 297). The attorney named Shaw was mentioned numerous times in subsequent seasons" account books, either as the recipient of or intermediary for certain payments, often but not always connected with musicians. |
