Paid Mr. Harris's draft to Mr. W: Woodfall |
Large sums of money occasionally moved between Covent Garden and the Woodfalls (newspaper proprietors) in the 1770s-90s, and, on 26 November 1787, the theatre received £200 from Thomas Harris to cover this particular payment. But the reasons are unclear, and it may be a mistake to categorise this payment as newspaper advertising. |

Paid Mrs. Grey |
Covent Garden paid a Mrs Grey multiple significant sums of money in the late 1780s, sometimes in relation to Thomas Harris, but her identity is unclear. The theatre employed a singer named Mrs Grey at this time, but her salary was only £1 a week at most; she does not seem a natural fit with these occasional payments (see BD vol. 6, pp. 320-1). |
