Properties 4s 3d Departmental Props.
Properties 4s 9d Departmental Johnstone Written as part of a longer entry, "Props. 4s/3d house Bill Johnstone 4s/9d", totalling 9s. It is possible that this should be interpreted as a payment of 4s 9d to "house Bill Johnstone", and also that, more broadly speaking, payments to Johnstone around this time were as much or more for housekeeping as for properties. But on days when Drury Lane was not making a house bill payment, the scribe regularly wrote out "house Bill" next to "Props." and its monetary figure anyway, then assigned no monetary figure to the house bill; and that is clearly what happened on this occasion too, as the scribe initially ruled a line from the end of "Bill" to the end of the text column, denoting that the record was finished, then later added "Johnstone 4s/9d" in slightly smaller and different writing above that line. Moreover, although Roger Johnstone's remit sometimes extended beyond the properties department, he does not seem to have been a housekeeper and/or to have been responsible for Drury Lane's house bill.
