There are sometimes extraordinary Supernumerary Scene-men made use of in Plays to help at the Traps &c. such as Richard 3rd. Mackbeth, the Tempest &c. which have a Shilling each". Because the candleman was only a small part of the bundle, and was apparently considered to be close enough to the scenemen to be grouped with them, these payments have been categorised as "Carpentry and Sceneshifting".
