Scene Painters £1 Internal By Mr. Dall on Accot. of Salary
Construction £20 External By Mr. Rich paid Mr. Gom [per] Receipt The alternative account book for this season (BL Eg. 2270) specifies that this was "for Gom at Uxbridge". Presumed to be for construction work at John Rich's house, Cowley Grove, rather than for theatre-related carpentry. For more on the Gom family, and suggestions as to their working relationship with CG, see Terry Jenkins, John Rich: The Man Who Built Covent Garden Theatre (2016), pp. 118-19.
Metals £36 16s External By Mr. Bedwell & Co. [per] bill The alternative account book for this season (BL Eg. 2270) identifies the recipients as "Messrs. Bedwell & Freke". Bedwell and Freke were described as "Braziers" in a record of 2 January 1761. Bedwell was presumably Thomas Bedwell, ironmonger, recorded voting in Westminster in 1749 (see London Lives); Freke was presumably William Freke, the ironmonger who later dealt regularly with CG, and who was listed in a trade directory as early as Kent's Directory (1759), p. 45.
Management £15 15s Internal By Mrs. Rich 3 Nights
Management £3 Internal By Mr. C Rich 3 Nights
Unknown £3 19s 3d Unknown By Mr. Austin for Extras in Alexander [per] bill A marginal note, bracketed to this and the following entry (also concerning "Alexander"), appears to read, "Barry". Austin painted and was paid a weekly bill, probably for painting room supplies; from the 1759-60 season onwards he also began to be paid for candle-snuffing duties. The nature of the "Extras" paid for here is therefore unclear.
Unknown 6s 3d Unknown By Mr. Austin [per] bill Austin was paid a weekly bill, probably for painting room supplies. However, only the record of 12 November 1757 specifies a "bill for Colours", and Austin began to be paid for candle-snuffing duties from the 1759-60 season onwards, so most of his bill payments cannot be confidently categorised.
