Renters' Shares £46 13s 4d External To Mr. Kynaston for 100 Nts Date unclear: "31" has been written in the margin, but is faded, as if there has been an effort to erase it. The date of the preceding payments, 22 March, is used by Milhous and Hume in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 89, and their practice has been followed here.
Musicians (Band) £21 8s 8d Internal To the band of Musick Date unclear: "31" has been written in the margin, but is faded, as if there has been an effort to erase it. The date of the preceding payments, 22 March, is used by Milhous and Hume in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 89, and their practice has been followed here.
Unknown £6 6s Unknown To Mr. Mure Pd Mr. Peacote [?] The name was elsewhere spelled "Peacop", and there is a certain similarity between the appearance of the final "p" in those cases and the "te" in this. Yet if the "te" here is supposed as a "p", then its bottom half is missing. Hutchison Mure was DL's mortgagee (lender), and perhaps became more directly involved in the theatre following Green and Amber's bankruptcy in December 1745. Milhous and Hume, in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 101 list Peacop as DL's "housekeeper". There are six payments "To Mr. Mure Pd Mr. Peacop" (or "Peacote [?]") in this season's account book, and two further specifying Peacop alone, but it is unclear exactly whom was being paid, or for what, on each of these occasions.
Dancers £4 12s Internal To Mis. [?] Scotts in full for for arrea [?] Milhous and Hume, in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 89 transcribe this as "To Mis Scotts in full for arrear", and note on p. 103, "According to this scribe's grammar, this entry suggests that both Isabella and J. Scott danced at Drury Lane this season, though only the former was advertised in The Tempest." However, the scribe's grammar is unclear, and may include corrections: the title looks rather like "Mrs." (the second and third letters are in superscript), and only a dot floating above it suggests "Mis.", which, even with that dot, is not a standard representation of either "Miss", "Misses" or "Mistresses".
Unknown £3 3s Unknown To Mr. Norton on acct. Date unclear: "31" has been written in the margin, but is faded, as if there has been an effort to erase it. The date of the preceding payments, 22 March, is used by Milhous and Hume in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 89, and their practice has been followed here. On p. 101, they list Norton as a house servant, but gloss his name, "servant or tradesperson?".
House Servants (Other) £2 10s Internal To Steel Mott & Porter 6 day Sallery Milhous and Hume, in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 104 note, "The entries of 15 and 22 March imply that Steel was in charge of a team that included Mott and Porter, but what they did is not clear."
Bill Distribution £1 16s Internal To the bill Setters Pr bill
Security 14s Internal To the Soldiers
Messengers and Porters 5s Internal To Portage Pd Frans. Heath Milhous and Hume, in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 104 note (not specifically on this payment), "In 1742-43 Francis Heath was a scenekeeper (P.R.O. LC 5/204); he later became wardrobe master, but his job this season is unknown."
Properties 1s 6d Departmental To Properties
House Servants (Other) 6s Internal To Pages
Dancers 10s Internal To Mr. Liviez on Acct "To" and "on Acct" written once but applying to this and three other entries.
Performers (Other) 5s Internal To Barnard on Acct "To" and "on Acct" written once but applying to this and three other entries. Milhous and Hume, in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 100 list "Barnard" amongst DL's performers this season, but note that the identification comes from the account book, as he is not listed in LS. BD does not record any "Barnard" at DL this season either. The reason for Milhous and Hume's identification seems to be that, of the four persons to whom the words "To" and "on Acct" here apply, two of them (Marshall and Leviez) are identifiable performers.
Actors 5s Internal To Marshal on Acct "To" and "on Acct" written once but applying to this and three other entries.
Performers (Other) 10s 6d Internal To Paul on Acct "To" and "on Acct" written once but applying to this and three other entries. Milhous and Hume, in 'A Drury Lane Account Book for 1745-46', p. 100 list "Paul" amongst DL's performers this season, but note that the identification comes from the account book, as he is not listed in LS. BD does not record any "Paul" at DL this season either. The reason for Milhous and Hume's identification seems to be that, of the four persons to whom the words "To" and "on Acct" here apply, two of them (Marshall and Leviez) are identifiable performers.
