Mr. Cibber |
All daily £1 payments to Cibber from 26 December 1740 until 20 April 1741 (after which the account book abruptly ends) lack the tick sign and marginal "pd" note written besides almost all other payments this season. Perhaps his payment arrangements changed on 26 December. |

Mrs. Cross 6 Days for last Week |
The likeliest recipient was Frances Cross, an actress who sometimes sung. However, BD vol. 4, p. 72 states she was paid only 8s daily at CG in 1740-41, which does not tally with the 6s 8d rate paid here. On p. 58 it records 6s 8d as the rate paid "Miss Cross", whom it observes only in 1740-41 and suggests to have been an actress. But it also notes that 6s 8d was the pay of Richard Cross, the actor who may have started being a prompter around this time, and it suggests "Miss Cross" may not have existed, being only an error for "Mr Cross". However, if anything, it looks here as though the scribe first wrote "Mr.", then corrected themselves, adding an "s" and therefore having to add a second dot, so that the dot would be directly beneath the "s". |

[nightly charge] |
This season's account book does not record or itemise the nightly charges, but it is evident that they were diverted from the nightly receipts. The sums are here calculated by deducting the money received into the treasury via Mr Wood from this night's performance receipts or benefit charge, as appropriate. |
