Category Amount Payment Type A/c book entry Notes
Actors £1 5s Internal Mr. Ryan
Actors £1 10s Internal Mr Delane
Actors £1 10s Internal Mrs. Horton
Actors £1 Internal Mr. Cibber All daily £1 payments to Cibber from 26 December 1740 until 20 April 1741 (after which the account book abruptly ends) lack the tick sign and marginal "pd" note written besides almost all other payments this season. Perhaps his payment arrangements changed on 26 December.
Actors 6s 8d Internal Mr Bridgwater
Doorkeepers and Officekeepers 2s 6d Internal Corbett
Performers (Other) £10 Internal Miss Horsington in further part of the Note Endors'd by her for 36 pounds and pd to mr. Evans In its entry for Margaretta Horsington, actress and dancer, BD vol. 7, p. 417 notes one of the records concerning her note and a £36 payment to Mr Evans. But it does not attempt to explain it, and in fact there were four such records, together covering the entire £36. The arrangement is here interpreted as a £36 promissory note which CG paid her on account of her performances, which she deposited with or used to pay Mr Evans, who cashed it in with CG in instalments.
Security 2s Internal Constable
Singers 10s 6d Internal Mrs. Chambers
Clothing Material (Decorations) £3 10s 6d External Do. [Mr. J. Rich] by Mrs. Colombine a Bill for Ribbons &c
Clothing Purchase (Headwear) £5 External Mr. Raynolds, Hatter on acct.
Management 16s 8d Internal Mr. C. Rich
Miscellaneous £28 7s 2d Departmental [nightly charge] This season's account book does not record or itemise the nightly charges, but it is evident that they were diverted from the nightly receipts. The sums are here calculated by deducting the money received into the treasury via Mr Wood from this night's performance receipts or benefit charge, as appropriate.
Unknown £10 13s Unknown Mr. J. Rich, by mr. Ashlee, a Bill
Unknown £30 Unknown Do [Mr. J. Rich] by a Note, taken up payable to Mr. Swinny On 14 April 1741 followed another £30 payment, "Mr. Swinny, for a Note of hand". BD vol. 14, p. 354 identifies the recipient of the latter as Owen Mac Swiney, but does not elaborate on its nature or reason, nor notices this earlier payment.
Unknown £20 Unknown Mr. Harrison, by a Note of hand Endors'd by him and paid to mr. Shorn A Mr Harrison was mentioned in three payment records of 1740-41, apparently being paid via notes of hand, which he endorsed, then deposited with or used to pay third parties, who then cashed them with CG. A Mr Harrison was also paid £10 8s on 29 October 1746 "the remainder of a Note with interest", which may have meant he (or a third party) was cashing in a note which he had endorsed, or may have meant that he had loaned CG money and was being repaid. In any case, the Mr Harrison(s) is/are unknown.
