Mantuamaking £20 Departmental Mrs. White mantua Maker by a Note of hand Endors'd by her & paid to Mr. Hughs Distinguishing the Whites and what they were paid for is not always straightforward: Susannah White made several large loans to Rich over the years, but also worked for CG's wardrobe, and various of her family members worked for the theatre in various capacities. For more on Susannah White, see Terry Jenkins, John Rich: The Man Who Built Covent Garden Theatre (2016), pp. 209, 240-41, 251; and for Catherine White, see BD vol. 16, p. 34. The payment is here interpreted as due for inhouse mantuamaking, paid as a promissory note that Susannah or Catherine White endorsed, then deposited with or used to pay Mr Hugh(e)s, who cashed it with CG.
Carpentry and Sceneshifting £300 Departmental Mr. Powell, Carpenter on acct. BD vol. 12, p. 101 identifies this as H. Powel, and suggests that he disbursed this money to the scenemen (although it does not link him with the Mr Powell, carpenter, who was regularly paid in 1757-58 for the scenemen). However, a "Mr. Powell, Pavior" was paid on 12 January 1741 "in full discharge of his agreemt. for keeping in repair the pavement at Lincoln's-inn-fields Theatre"; if the two men were the same, then this payment, too, may have been part of that agreement.
